We have worked our way through understanding Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom according to scripture. All the companion verses for each stage of spiritual life lay out a foundation of understanding of how we grow in Christ. The picture of the board helps us to see the three basic phases of growth that mirrors physical growth. The only difference between natural growth and spiritual growth is that a believer must decide to grow in Christ, as opposed to the natural growth that occurs in the formative years of physical life.
1 John 2:12-14 reveals the three basic stages of growth:
1. Little children — birth to young adolescence — receives knowledge of who they are, as a new believer, and basic information concerning scripture. This is the “simple treasure” or historic application. Someone wrote it to a particular group of people at a particular time. Basic information to help lay the foundation of their new relationship with Christ.
2. Young men — adolescence to young adult — understanding — application of the knowledge in daily life, growing in Christ, exercising your faith (Philippians 2:12). This is the “personal treasure” or devotional application of scripture where the Holy Spirit reveals God’s will for your life of being conformed to Christ. Romans 8:28-29, 12:1-2
3. Fathers / adults — those who teach others sharing the wisdom that God has given them through their maturity in Christ. This is the “deep treasure” or doctrinal application of scripture that must be taught. Ephesians 4:11-16; Philippians 4:9; 2 Timothy 2:2
Growing in Christ is a lifelong process. It is called a race, and we are to run it with patience! Hebrews 12:1-3
