Below is the audio only recording of today's lesson for those of you who would like to listen while you drive or walk or what ever. It is a very small file size.
It was great to complete Matthew 5 in our study of the Gospels viewing them through the lens of Mystery that was hid in God (Ephesians 3:9, Colossians 1:26) from the foundation of the world. The Sermon on the Mount is comprised of Matthew 5 – 7, where Jesus outlines the constitution of the kingdom of heaven. We are unpacking, since the dispensation of the grace of God was a mystery, how Jesus redefines certain parts of the law of Moses and how, in the messianic kingdom the subjects of the kingdom will be held to a higher standard. Every time we read, “you have heard it hath been said,” which is the law of Moses, and how Jesus says, “but I say unto you...”, which is a new revelation that Jesus gives concerning these laws, and how greater responsibility will be expected of everyone. We can see how the new wine / old wine discussed in Matthew 9:14-17 is a comparison of the new teachings of Jesus in contrast to the law of Moses. It was great to see how Paul, in Romans 12:14-21 mirrors much of the teachings of Christ concerning our relationship to the lost world. Ultimately, Paul says, Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. This helps us to see how the teachings of Jesus in Matthew, though not written to us, are certainly applicable for us in a very real devotional and inspirational way. Matthew 5:33-37: Jesus gives instruction concerning perjury and threatening others. He makes it clear that no one is to bear false witness (Exodus 20:16). Isaiah 66:1 Matthew 5:38-42: The kingdom law will be far more stringent than Mosaic law, because people will be judged swiftly for their attitudes and actions. It is pretty easy to understand how the millennial kingdom ruled by Messiah King Jesus can be declared a military dictatorship. He will rule in righteousness and holiness with a rod of iron. Luke 6:27-31, Exodus 22:26-27, Lev 19:18 Matthew 5: 43-48: The kingdom law has a much higher standard concerning love and compassion than Mosaic law. Luke 6:32-36, Lev 19:33-34 This Sunday, we will be diving into Matthew 6, where the Lord's Prayer is a central theme. It will be a great study. Please make every effort to attend. We will be closely examining what is to us and what is for our learning. It will be quite the journey!
